Interview: Grace Weber

Singer/Songwriter Grace Weber has made her presence felt around the world with her music. Along with multiple albums under her belt, as well as penning the opening track on Chance the Rapper’s Coloring Book “All We Got” feat. Kanye West & Chicago Children’s Choir - Weber has performed on a myriad of stages for Lady Antebellum to Oprah and SXSW. We sat down with Weber to talk about her music, her motivation and her new track "Young Love Games."

Introduce yourself!

Hello world! My name is Grace, I was born and raised in Milwaukee, WI and now am currently living in LA. I grew up in a really musical family. My mom is one of 10 kids and her dad, my grandpa, had each of his kids learn an instrument growing up so all of my 9 aunts and uncles, and my mom, played different instruments.

So, when I was growing up, we used to sing and play music around the piano at my grandparents house with all my aunts and uncles and cousins, it was amazing. Because of this, music has always felt synonymous with family for me. I joined the Central City Youth Gospel Choir in Milwaukee when I was 12, and that plus singing on Showtime at the Apollo when I was 16, lead me down my path towards becoming a professional artist.

How did you get your start in music? Besides the above, I also grew up playing flute and piano.

I had really amazing music, art, and choir teachers in high school who helped me on my path towards becoming who I was an artist.

Once I got to college, I started writing my own music and that lead to forming a few different bands in college and starting to perform at a lot of different venues in New York City and around the east coast. I got invited to sing on the Oprah Winfrey show when I was a senior at NYU and that sort of led to jumping into the craziness of the music industry.

It wasn’t until I met Nate Fox, Nico Segal, and Peter Cottontale of The Social Experiment (Chance the Rapper) though, that I really started writing and creating the music that I think defines me as an artist and singer. I ended up winning a Grammy after writing a song with Chance for his album Coloring Book, it was an amazing experience. I’m gearing up to release my album produced by Nate, Nico, and Peter in 2020. I’m so excited!

You just released a new song "Young Love Games" tell us about the new track!

Yes! I’m so excited about ‘Young Love Games.' I wrote it about someone who conflated love with manipulation and power. Writing the song helped me process that just because someone says “I love you,” doesn’t mean that they really know what love is. I hope ‘young love games’ can be an anthem for all the people who know what real love is and have no more time for the bullsh*t.”

What has been your biggest triumph?

I think my biggest triumph as an artist has been navigating the music industry and being able to stay true to who I am and create the art that I want to make. I’m proud of what I’ve put out into the world and I love connecting with my fans and being a part a community of people who just love music and who hold on to hope that things can be better if we come together and lift each other up.

What has been your biggest tribulation?

I’ve gone through a lot in the past few years and what keeps me going is the knowledge that there are so many good people in my life and in the world. My gratitude for all the good is monumentally bigger and stronger than any of the bad. Being able to write music about the hard things I've gone through has been a huge blessing. Music has helped me process the hardships and embrace my resilience.

How did you get involved with Koss?

I was lucky enough to get to go to high school with DJ Shawna! Shawna introduced me to Koss Headphones and now I’m hooked!! I love how incredible the sound quality is, I love using different headphones to listen to and mix my music on so I can test the way the song sounds on a few different styles.

I also love how light weight the headphones are, they’re amazing for traveling because I can keep them on my ears for long periods of time without them ever getting uncomfortable or weighing me down. I really love Koss.

If you weren't doing music, what else would you be doing?

I don’t know! I think I’d probably be a full time painter and/or a lawyer. I love painting, I got a studio art minor in college. My dad is a lawyer and I’ve always looked up to lawyers who fight for the little guy and for civil rights cases because they have to work so hard to stand up for justice and fight for what’s right.

What's one thing most people don't know about you?

I’m a major introvert. I struggle with putting myself out there on social media because I really love crawling into my shell a lot of the time. I love sharing my art, the deepest parts of myself through my lyrics, and performing in front of big crowds, but sharing other parts of myself and my life can sometimes be hard for me. I also LOVE northern Wisconsin and places where you really feel like you’re escaping and can be “in the middle of nowhere.” I want to live in Tomahawk, WI for at least a few months at some point in my life.

You currently live in L.A. but grew up in Milwaukee. What do you miss most about your home city?

I miss the kindness of people in Milwaukee and how much space there is in Wisconsin. I also miss my family and friends so much, I can’t wait to move back to Wisconsin honestly. I miss the refreshing crisp air of the fall and seeing the leaves on the ground, the coziness of winter and fireplaces and snow, the inspiration of hearing the first birds chirping in spring, and the boat rides and barbecues and beer runs in Summer. There’s nothing like the amazing-ness of the 4 seasons in the midwest.

What do you have in store for 2020?

I am SO excited to put out my album in 2020, I have so many creative things in store for the roll out, I literally cannot wait. I want to create a lot of art with my fan base for the roll out, so you’re definitely gonna see some really cool original art coming from all around the world for the album release. I also want to have cool exclusive early listening parties for the album so I’m working on setting that all up now. And then I’ll be going on my first headlining tour in 2020 too, so it’s all just gonna be magical. Agh I can’t wait!!!

Where do you see yourself 10 years from now?

I hope that I’m happy and balanced. I want to have kids with my amazing husband, Dane. I hope I’m doing well enough as an artist that I can tour at least every other year. I want to make music forever and sing until I can’t make any more sound from my vocal chords. And I hope I have a lot of cats. I’m determined to be a cat lady.
